Are LED Headlight Bulbs Legal in the UK? 2026 MOT Rules

Posted by James on 29th Oct 2026

The MOT rules for LED replacement bulbs in halogen headlamps changed on 14 October 2026. MOT testers in England, Scotland and Wales can now accept an ECE approved LED replacement bulb in a compatible halogen headlamp, provided the bulb is approved for use in that lamp and the vehicle has the correct approval sticker fitted.

The change does not mean that every LED bulb that fits a halogen socket is approved. The bulb’s approval and its sticker must relate to the actual product fitted. The headlamp must also meet the usual MOT requirements.

What changed in the MOT rules?

The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) updated its MOT inspection guidance to explain how testers should check LED replacement light sources, also called LEDr bulbs, fitted in halogen headlamps.

The change applies to class 3, 4, 5 and 7 vehicles. It does not apply to class 1 and 2 motorcycles, halogen headlamp units converted to HID bulbs, or complete replacement LED headlamp units.

The change is described in DVSA MOT Special Notice 05-26. You can also read the relevant MOT inspection manual guidance.

What does the approval sticker need to show?

The manufacturer issued sticker must be permanently fixed to the vehicle and readily visible to the MOT tester during inspection. It must show:

  • The LED replacement bulb category, for example H11 LEDr
  • The approved variant
  • The rated voltage
  • The ECE approval number
  • The manufacturer’s name
  • An anti-counterfeit security feature, such as a hologram

The sticker must match the LED bulb fitted. The MOT guidance says the headlamp must fail if the sticker is missing, unreadable, appears to have been tampered with, or clearly does not match the bulb.

Where should the sticker go?

The sticker needs to be permanently attached somewhere the MOT tester can see it. On top of the headlamp may be a suitable place, if it remains securely attached and readily visible during inspection. Follow the bulb manufacturer’s fitting instructions.

Does a projector headlamp make an LED bulb hard to identify?

A projector lens can produce a sharp, controlled beam, and from outside the vehicle an LED bulb may not be easy to distinguish from a standard bulb by appearance alone. A good beam pattern is useful, but it does not prove that the bulb has ECE approval.

The MOT guidance says testers are not expected to remove lamp covers or light sources to look for approval markings. For an LED replacement identified as fitted in a halogen headlamp, the approval sticker is the evidence the tester checks. The vehicle must still meet the other headlamp requirements, including those for beam condition and aim.

Does an E-mark or “road legal” claim prove the bulb is approved?

Not by itself. Check that the exact LED replacement bulb has the relevant approval and comes with its own matching approval sticker. A bulb that fits the socket, or a general claim that it is “road legal”, does not tell you whether that particular product has the approval required by this MOT route.

Are H4 and H7 LED bulbs included?

H4 and H7 LED replacement bulbs are not currently included in the harmonised UNECE LED replacement categories discussed in this article. A good beam pattern or a close physical fit does not replace formal approval for the specific bulb category.

UNECE has also adopted LED replacement categories for H8, H16 and HB4. That creates a technical route for products in those categories, but the category itself does not mean every bulb sold in that fitting has received product approval. unece.org

LiteSync P36 H11 ECE approved LED bulbs

Our LiteSync P36 H11 LED bulbs are due in soon. They will be supplied with an ECE R37 approval certificate and the matching approval sticker. We expect them to arrive at the end of November 2026.

Once available, customers should check their vehicle’s bulb type and confirm that an H11 bulb is suitable for their specific headlamp before ordering. The sticker must be fitted where it is permanently attached and readily visible to the MOT tester.

What about our other LED bulbs?

Our existing LED bulbs are designed to provide strong brightness and a controlled beam pattern. They have not been through the ECE R37 LED replacement approval process and do not come with the approval sticker required for this MOT route.

Brightness and beam pattern are important qualities, but they are different from formal type approval. The new MOT guidance applies to LED replacement bulbs with the required approval and matching sticker.

How can I check whether an LED replacement is suitable for my car?

Check your vehicle’s handbook or bulb guide to find the correct bulb category. Then make sure the LED replacement is approved for that category and that its approval certificate and sticker identify the exact product you are buying.

After fitting, make sure the bulb is installed correctly and the headlamp beam is properly aimed. The normal MOT requirements for headlamps still apply.

Frequently asked questions

Can any LED bulb now pass an MOT in a halogen headlamp?

An LED bulb may produce a sharp, correctly aimed beam, particularly behind a projector lens. However, appearance and beam pattern alone do not show whether the bulb is approved. Under the MOT guidance, an LED replacement identified in a halogen headlamp needs the appropriate approval and a matching sticker. The tester does not have to remove covers or bulbs to check for approval markings.

Will a correctly aimed LED conversion automatically pass?

A good beam pattern does not by itself establish that the bulb is approved. The headlamp must meet the usual MOT requirements, and where an LED replacement is identified in a halogen headlamp, the required matching approval sticker must be present and readable.

Where should I put the approval sticker?

It must be permanently fixed somewhere readily visible to the MOT tester. The top of the headlamp may be suitable if the sticker stays secure and visible. Follow the bulb manufacturer’s fitting instructions.

Are H4 and H7 LED replacement bulbs covered by the new MOT guidance?

H4 and H7 are not currently included in the harmonised UNECE LED replacement categories described above. Check the approval details for the exact bulb before relying on a road-use or MOT claim.

Are the LiteSync P36 H11 bulbs approved?

The incoming LiteSync P36 H11 bulbs are due to be supplied with an ECE R37 approval certificate and matching approval sticker. We expect stock at the end of November 2026.
